SUMMARY:Open rehearsals by the ‘Tiber Ensemble’\, Monday 30 March at 11am.
DESCRIPTION:Almost 100 years after the composition of the Serenade\, Op. 46\, by Alfredo Casella\, a leading Italian composer of the 20th century\, the chamber ensemble “Tiber Ensemble” offers listeners the refined compositional mastery of this composer\, who remains little known to the general public even today. \nThe ensemble is holding an open dress rehearsal in anticipation of the upcoming concerts the group will perform in Rome and the surrounding area\, with the aim of celebrating the great Italian masters who have made the Italian tradition famous throughout the world; proof of this is the fact that the Serenade presented here won Casella first prize in a major composition competition in Philadelphia\, tied with another great musical genius\, the Hungarian Bela Bartok. The various movements of the Serenade are all forms dear to the Italian musical tradition \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition ‘From Craftsmanship to Art (Dürer\, Raimondi\, Lucas); from the opening words to the title page: two journeys’ - Guided tour schedule\, additional date Thursday\, 23 April
DESCRIPTION:NEW ADDITIONAL DATE THURSDAY 23 APRIL\, 4.30 PM \nOn 4 December\, the Casanatense Library will open its doors to a new\, significant cultural event: a true journey into the heart of art history and communication. We are pleased to announce the inauguration of the exhibition From Craftsmanship to Art (Dürer\, Raimondi\, Lucas); from the incipit to the frontispiece\, an exhibition project that intertwines centuries of creativity and innovation. The event is divided into two thematic sections that celebrate the power of the sign: from the exceptional skills of three Renaissance engravers – Albrecht Dürer\, Marcantonio Raimondi and Lucas Van Leyden – to the extraordinary metamorphosis of the text\, born from the hand of the amanuensis and multiplied by the printing press. This journey is not limited to exhibiting works\, but becomes an opportunity to reflect on the universal value of knowledge and the timeless beauty of the mark left on paper. \nThe first itinerary\, spread across seven display cases\, aims to highlight and raise awareness of some of the most beautiful and interesting works by three great masters of engraving: the German Albrecht Dürer\, the Italian Marcantonio Raimondi and the Flemish Lucas Van Leyden\, all of whom lived between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century. Three immense talents\, deserving of credit for having elevated wood and metal engraving to a true art form\, thus making a great contribution to the history of Italian and European art in general. In this context\, given the importance and undisputed and exceptional skills of the three masters\, it was deemed appropriate to exhibit the works starting with the oldest artist\, Dürer\, born in 1471\, then moving on to Raimondi\, born between 1479 and 1480\, and ending with Lucas\, born in 1494. The exhibition provides a broad overview of the sources of inspiration for the individual authors: from the sacred to the profane\, from history to myth\, to “everyday life”\, touching on themes such as the lives of saints and the Virgin Mary\, mythological and legendary stories\, and realistic scenes depicting various trades. \nThe second section\, spread across five display cases\, aims to show how manuscripts influenced the aesthetics and structure of printed books\, and how printing\, in turn\, transformed the very concept of text and authorship. For centuries\, words were created by hand: copied\, decorated and handed down by generations of scribes who transformed every page into a work of art. Then\, in the 15th century\, the printing press broke that ancient silence. Suddenly\, books were no longer unique\, but could be multiplied. Ideas could travel\, cross borders\, change people’s minds and lives. The exhibition recounts this extraordinary moment: the encounter between the hand and the machine\, between the slowness of the gesture and the speed of printing. A dialogue that was not a break\, but a transformation: the first printers were inspired by copyists\, imitated their characters\, preserved the illuminated initials\, and sought to give the printed page the grace and beauty of the manuscript. And so\, for a while\, the printed book was still a manuscript disguised as something new. Through illuminated manuscripts (such as the wonderful Ms. 453 containing De bello gallico written in the elegant hand of Bartolomeo Sanvito)\, incunabula (such as the mysterious Hypnerotomachia Poliphili published in 1499 by Aldo Manuzio in Venice)\, sixteenth-century editions (such as a precious Book of Hours rich in miniatures printed on parchment in around 1533 by the Parisian Germain Hardou) \nand 17th-century manuscripts\, the exhibition shows how manuscripts left a profound mark on the nascent art of printing and how printing\, in turn\, transformed manuscripts into surprising hybrid products: handwritten texts laid out as if they were printed and often enriched with engravings and title pages that\, until then\, had been foreign to the world of scribes. \nThe exhibition will be open until 13 March 2026 \nGuided tours by curators Dr Lezzi and Dr Migliori\, free admission with booking recommended: \nThursday 29 January\, 4.30pm\nThursday 12 February\, 4.30pm\nThursday 12 March\, 4.30pm. \nThursday\, 23 April\, 4.30 pm. \n

SUMMARY:Generative Art International Conference 2025 - 18 December 2025\, 18:00 - 21:00
DESCRIPTION:What is Generative Art? \nGenerative Art performs the idea as a process. Moving the creativity from Objects/Events to Codes\, GA builds the contemporary complex natural/artificial environment. Generative Algorithms and Transforming Rules realize\, as natural DNA does\, always different and unpredictable series of events\, artworks\, industrial objects\, architectures\, music\, environment\, communications\, software\, and hardware devices\, all recognizable by each generative creative concept.\nGenerative Art is identifiable as one of the most advanced approaches in the creative and design world. It performs the incoming new naturality of the artificial world. Generative Projects\, Morphogenetic Design\, Evolutionary Systems can design the species of incoming events\, their identity in progress\, the recognizability of each possibly generated object\, the complexity of the contemporary world\, spaces\, communications\, and music.\nIn Architecture GA can increase the identity and uniqueness of each city\, performing generative codes that can be used in designing the incoming transforming paths of each town.\nIn Industrial Product Design GA performs the relation between intelligent industrial production and advanced design ideas of new naturality.\nIn In Visual Art\, Literature and Music GA opens a new era of reproducibility of artworks. From clone to unique and un-repeatable sequence of possible final results.\nThe generative approach represents the way to carry out the idea as a product\, and not only the artifact-product-piece as the unique representation of the idea. \nGenerative Art Conference is a meeting place to exchange ideas\, theoretical approaches\, operative\, and teaching experiences\, and to value the innovative field of intelligent industrial production and business that belongs to the Generative approach.\nFollowing last years’ experience\, people can show their innovative works in the concurrent GA Performance Festival that will be held on the evening of the same days of the conference. This will be an opportunity to show and enjoy the most advanced mix of generative entertainment media. \nFree admission subject to availability.

SUMMARY:Richard Wagner\, il cane e il pappagallo
DESCRIPTION:This biography of Richard Wagner offers a contemporary and passionate reinterpretation of the life and work of the famous German composer. What emerges is a complex figure\, full of contradictions\, intense emotions\, successes and failures. The narrative\, rich in twists and turns\, alternates moments of great generosity with acts of profound pettiness. Wagner is portrayed as the protagonist of an almost cinematic story\, far removed from stereotypes. The author\, Valerio Vicari\, also highlights the more controversial aspects of his life. The event will feature cellist Alessandro Guaitolini\, enriching the meeting with live music. The book is aimed at those who are curious and passionate about music\, theatre and history. Admission is free\, with a complimentary copy of the book for those under 25.

Thus\, the best students from the violin class of Prof. Valeria Profeta Romano\, teacher at the “Farnesina” high school of music\, will also be protagonists. Among the compositions performed\, special emphasis will be given to the figure of Maestro Luciano Berio\, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.

SUMMARY:PRESENTATION OF THE ALBUM “SOGNO - ROMANZO DA SALOTTO\, BY FRANCESCO PAOLO TOSTI” \, 16 APRIL 2025
DESCRIPTION:Presentation of the CD album ‘Sogno’. \, music by Paolo Tosti\, by Fabiana Rossi (soprano) and Anna Lucia Trimboli (piano); Wednesday 16 April\, 4 p.m.\, free admission subject to availability. \n‘SOGNO’ is a project that has been long awaited and finally brought to fruition\, performed with a classical and essential ensemble\, a soprano and piano duo that focuses on the performance of some salon romances by F. P. Tosti\, in which strong emotionality is a common element in each piece\, highlighting lyricism\, theatrical aspects and topical stories. A journey about life\, love and the joy of living that the romances convey to us as an expression of Romanticism. A journey that we wanted to undertake because it immediately aroused intensity of feeling in us. A record can only be told up to a certain point\, it is from listening to it that you can get to the depths of your soul\, our desire is to let you be moved in a way that is as unexpected as it is irresistible. An important artistic understanding\, a thread between the sound of the voice and the sound of the piano.\nThis is how our record was born: a way of perceiving the essence of Music!

SUMMARY:PRESENTATION OF THE BOOK "THE SUICIDE OF ISRAEL" BY ANNA FOA'
DESCRIPTION:Presentation of the book ‘The Suicide of Israel’\, Wednesday from 5.30 p.m.\, with talks by the author Anna Foà. Free admission subject to availability. \nIsrael was already going through a period of dramatic crisis before the criminal attack of 7 October 2023. Large demonstrations were clamouring for the resignation of Netanyahu and his government and the country was practically at a standstill. The response to Hamas’ terrorist act with the Gaza war\, however\, risks being suicidal for Israel. On the one hand\, in fact\, we have the involution of Zionism\, or rather of Zionisms: from the original one of the late 19th century\, through the liberal and pro-peace with the Arabs\, to the growth of the extremist settler movement and the assassination of Rabin. On the other hand\, the rest of the Jewish world – the American and European diaspora – is today confronted with a growing anti-Semitism which\, contrary to Netanyahu’s propaganda\, is not the same as anti-Zionism\, but which certainly draws inspiration and nourishment from the events of the Gaza war. In order to save Israel\, it is necessary to counter the Jewish supremacism of the current Netanyahu government with the idea that the State of Israel must exercise equal rights towards all its citizens and must end the occupation by favouring the creation of a Palestinian state. Any support for Israel’s rights – existence\, security – cannot be separated from that of the rights of the Any support for Israel’s rights – existence\, security – cannot be separated from that of Palestinian rights. Without a different policy towards the Palestinians Hamas cannot be defeated but will continue to rise from its ashes. It is not weapons that will defeat Hamas\, but policy.

SUMMARY:METAPHYSICAL FELLINI\, WOMEN AND DREAMS
DESCRIPTION:A dialogue with Monica Vincenzi and Luigi Casa\, authors of three essays dedicated to the great Maestro from Rimini; the first\, Fellini Metafisico\, is dedicated to the symbolic analysis of his filmography\, in a pedagogical key to show which are the most highlighted and topical educational aspects. Fellini’s heroines often contrast with the Masculine in its various aspects and send us messages that are also fundamental for our present\, especially on the difficulties of relationships that can become dangerous or in any case difficult to manage\, preventing personal fulfilment and an ultimately happy life. The other two essays are dedicated to a commentary on the Master’s Book of Dreams and attempt to explain in simple terms the illustrated stories that Fellini so generously left us\, expressing his thoughts on true spiritual\, philosophical and social topics in the broadest sense.

SUMMARY:PRESENTATION OF THE BOOK ‘UN ANNO QUASI PERFETTO’ BY GIACOMO VISCONTI
DESCRIPTION:THE AUTHOR \nEmilian by birth and recently moved to Rome\, Giacomo Visconti is a teacher of literature and often\, on social media\, addresses important issues related to the world of school and his profession. He has over a hundred thousand followers\, with whom he generously interacts\, telling about himself\, his passions\, his affections and his travels\, but above all about his connection with culture and teaching. THE ROMANCE An Almost Perfect Year explores school life and the dynamics between teachers and students\, addressing themes such as the value of listening\, the importance of looking beyond appearances and personal growth. It can be defined as a true coming-of-age novel as it follows the maturation path of the protagonists\, particularly the students\, who learn to confront themselves and the world around them\, finding a ‘star’ to follow in their emotional and intellectual evolution. Drawing much inspiration from the figure of Alberto Manzi\, the author advocates a positive vision of school\, emphasising the importance of looking at students as unique individuals and not just as ‘numbers’. He believes that teachers must be complete figures\, who go beyond traditional teaching\, also becoming psychologists and educators\, especially in an often disrupted family context. He believes in deep listening\, in the importance of terminology\, and in the need for a school orientation that starts from a young age.

SUMMARY:The Vine and Wine. Culture\, production and symbols
DESCRIPTION:On 21 February 2025 at 6 p.m.\, in the Salone Monumentale of the Biblioteca Casanatense in Rome\, the bibliographic exhibition ‘The Vine and Wine: Culture\, Production and Symbols’\, organised by the Biblioteca Casanatense\, will be inaugurated. The exhibition traces the history of viticulture and wine production in Europe through the display of manuscripts\, printed books\, engravings and archaeological finds. Among the precious codices and volumes on public display will be manuscript 4164\, the Libro delle villerecce utilitade (vernacular translation of the Ruralium Commodorum Opus)\, written by the Bolognese agronomist Pietro (or Pier) de’ Crescenzi (1233-1320). Considered the first treatise on agronomy of the medieval period\, it was widely disseminated throughout Europe\, in Latin and in translation\, from the 14th to the 19th century.\n\nThe exhibition will also be an opportunity to get to know the Biblioteca Casanatense\, a prestigious cultural centre in 18th-century Rome\, which was established at the behest of Cardinal Girolamo Casanate\, who in 1698 donated the most conspicuous part of his estate to the Dominican fathers of the Convent of Santa Maria sopra Minerva for the opening of a public library and a centre for propagating Thomist doctrine. In addition\, it will also be possible to take an immersive wine-tasting tour\, where some interesting wine-producing realities of Italy will lead the public to discover the production of certain types of wine and the characteristics of the territory of origin. \n\n\nBook your entry here (limited places)

SUMMARY:"Luigi De Gregori - Salvare la Creatura". Un tributo a uno dei custodi della cultura italiana durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale
DESCRIPTION:Using period footage\, dynamic editing and contemporary testimony\, the intense documentary Luigi De Gregori – Saving the Creature brings to light the work of librarian Luigi De Gregori. Despite the chaos and atrocities of the Second World War in Italy\, De Gregori managed to protect the country’s literary cultural heritage at the risk of his life. \nWe are in Rome\, in 1936. War is imminent\, and the Italian government launches an anti-aircraft protection plan to safeguard the nation’s cultural treasures. Luigi De Gregori\, a librarian of international renown\, is entrusted with the task of defending the capital’s most precious library heritage\, and begins the search for safe hiding places. \nWith the outbreak of the conflict in 1939\, the librarians\, recounts Andrea Paoli in his book Salviamo la creatura\, are ready: shelters\, mainly castles and abbeys along the Apennine ridge\, are set up to guard the heritage. From 1942\, however\, the situation precipitates. The Allies\, with bases in North Africa\, bombarded the centre-south and landed in Sicily. The books\, even those already protected\, are now in danger. \nA complex relocation operation begins to save half a million volumes. But in 1943\, with the armistice and the Nazi invasion\, the books not only risk destruction\, but also theft by the Nazis\, known for their hunger for art. Thanks to an informal network\, the Italian librarians\, under the leadership of De Gregori\, implement what Simonetta Buttò\, former director of the National Library of Naples\, calls an ‘elastic protection plan’: each director becomes an inventive custodian\, adapting to the challenges of his or her territory to safeguard culture. \nIn these crucial years\, De Gregori risked his life\, hiding the most precious volumes in the Vatican library and making it his mission\, as he wrote in a letter\, to ‘save the creature’ of Italian culture. His work\, which continued even after the liberation of Rome and during the reconstruction\, earned him the title of ‘Italian monument man’ in the library sector. The reflections of Vincenza Iossa\, the third interviewee in the documentary\, highlight the moral integrity of a man who put culture and the collective heritage even before his own life. \nMeeting the Author At the end of the screening\, the author will be present in the auditorium to meet the audience and discuss the genesis and making of the documentary. This will be a unique opportunity to learn more about the historical narrative and the profound meaning of this work dedicated to the defence of culture.
