SUMMARY:"Luigi De Gregori - Salvare la Creatura". Un tributo a uno dei custodi della cultura italiana durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale
DESCRIPTION:Using period footage\, dynamic editing and contemporary testimony\, the intense documentary Luigi De Gregori – Saving the Creature brings to light the work of librarian Luigi De Gregori. Despite the chaos and atrocities of the Second World War in Italy\, De Gregori managed to protect the country’s literary cultural heritage at the risk of his life. \nWe are in Rome\, in 1936. War is imminent\, and the Italian government launches an anti-aircraft protection plan to safeguard the nation’s cultural treasures. Luigi De Gregori\, a librarian of international renown\, is entrusted with the task of defending the capital’s most precious library heritage\, and begins the search for safe hiding places. \nWith the outbreak of the conflict in 1939\, the librarians\, recounts Andrea Paoli in his book Salviamo la creatura\, are ready: shelters\, mainly castles and abbeys along the Apennine ridge\, are set up to guard the heritage. From 1942\, however\, the situation precipitates. The Allies\, with bases in North Africa\, bombarded the centre-south and landed in Sicily. The books\, even those already protected\, are now in danger. \nA complex relocation operation begins to save half a million volumes. But in 1943\, with the armistice and the Nazi invasion\, the books not only risk destruction\, but also theft by the Nazis\, known for their hunger for art. Thanks to an informal network\, the Italian librarians\, under the leadership of De Gregori\, implement what Simonetta Buttò\, former director of the National Library of Naples\, calls an ‘elastic protection plan’: each director becomes an inventive custodian\, adapting to the challenges of his or her territory to safeguard culture. \nIn these crucial years\, De Gregori risked his life\, hiding the most precious volumes in the Vatican library and making it his mission\, as he wrote in a letter\, to ‘save the creature’ of Italian culture. His work\, which continued even after the liberation of Rome and during the reconstruction\, earned him the title of ‘Italian monument man’ in the library sector. The reflections of Vincenza Iossa\, the third interviewee in the documentary\, highlight the moral integrity of a man who put culture and the collective heritage even before his own life. \nMeeting the Author At the end of the screening\, the author will be present in the auditorium to meet the audience and discuss the genesis and making of the documentary. This will be a unique opportunity to learn more about the historical narrative and the profound meaning of this work dedicated to the defence of culture.

SUMMARY:Spaces of Resistance\, Conflict and Reconstruction of Order in the Urban World
DESCRIPTION:The International Colloquium “Spaces of resistance\, conflict and reconstruction of order in the urban world” has as its central axis space\, which is established as an analytical category for the study of political action\, communication and culture in urban societies of the Ancien Régime. In the urban world of the Ancien Régime\, space and the various acts of appropriation – effective or symbolic\, temporary or permanent – of it\, carried out by a plurality of actors\, participated in the processes of construction of urban identities and played a significant role in political communication between the various bodies and subjects of the civitas and the local powers and higher political entities in which the cities were inserted. Through formal and informal acts\, sometimes ritualized\, of occupation\, use and control of space carried out by both elites and ordinary people\, positions of social prestige\, spheres of jurisdictional action\, areas of political power\, but also social and cultural identities were manifested. The uses of space and its different meanings also made visible struggles\, resistance and conflicts\, aspirations\, negotiations and consensus by actors within and outside the city. The colloquium aims to analyse the uses\, meanings and perceptions of these social actions in which spaces were protagonists and formed part of urban identities and political communication in the city\, from very varied geographical/territorial frameworks and chronologies. The presentation\, discussion and reflection on these issues will allow us to advance in historical knowledge about the social actions and practices that shaped political spheres and forms of governance that\, ultimately\, inform the political cultures of the Ancien Régime and its changes through complex dynamics that had the urban space itself as an active subject. \nInternational Scientific CommitteeManuel-Reyes Garcia Hurtado (University of Coruna)Mauro Hernandez Benitez (UNED)Girl Blacksmiths Cleret of Langavant (University of Cantabria)Yves Junot (Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France)Ofelia Rey Castelao (University of Santiago de Compostela)Mafalda Soares da Cunha (University of Evora)Rafael Sagredo Baeza (Pontifical Catholic University of Chile)Marina Torres Trimállez (University of Cantabria) \nAcademic SecretariatValentina Emiliani (Sapienza University of Rome)

SUMMARY:Violent Rome. Crimes and murders in the city of the popes
DESCRIPTION:DOMENICA DI CARTA 2024 ‘Violent Rome. Crimes and murders in the city of the popes’ A story taken from manuscript 972 and from the “Editti e Bandi” fund of the Casanatense Library With the participation of journalist and criminologist Imma Giuliani  like a detective\, the librarian and the archivist move around the “crime scene” (of the past in their case)\, collecting clues\, photographing and documenting traces\, following trails\, which will lead them to the partial or overall reconstruction of a given scenario\, event or crime. A sort of cold case\, but marked by those noir tints that only the modern eye can impart. Born from the idea of promoting and enhancing the Casanatense EdittiBandi collection and\, therefore\, a category of bibliographic heritage that is little known on a large scale\, the initiative will retrace the steps of the research conducted for the realisation of the event itself. With a ‘magnifying glass’ and determination in solving the three cases examined here\, ‘sniffing out possible leads’\, it was possible to read the entire Casanatense manuscript Ms.972\, from which it was then possible to consult and study documents preserved in the State Archives in Rome. The baton will then be passed to the journalist and criminologist Imma Giuliani\, who will lead the visitor along the path of analysis with which it is possible to read historical and archival documents with the gaze and approach of someone who\, however\, carries out this profession today. 13 October 2024 10.30 a.m.-12.30 p.m. At the Monumental Hall of the Casanatense Library Via Sant’ Ignazio\, 52 Rome Admission free subject to availability

SUMMARY:GEP 2024
DESCRIPTION:‘Every family has a story to tell’ \nSEARCHING FOR ROOTS Brief introduction to genealogical research \n28 September 2024 10.30 a.m. At the Monumental Hall of the Biblioteca Casanatense Via Sant’ Ignazio\, 52 Rome Admission free while places last Retracing the history of each family\, one can trace its journey through time and space\, listening to each voice and putting together the individual testimonies\, to build a larger story that is none other than History\, History with a capital “S”. On the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2024\, dedicated to Heritage in Motion\, the Casanatense Library proposes a meeting dedicated to Genealogy\, Family History and how to conduct genealogical research\, hosting Dtt. Matteo Borelli\, Corresponding Member of the Italian Heraldic Genealogical Institute (IAGI)\, in dialogue with Prof. Miles Nerini\, Deputy Director of the State Archives of Modena. ‘The aim of the meeting is to provide those present with a brief introduction to Genealogy and Family History\, examining its essential foundations and illustrating some useful research tools. Among the many questions that will be attempted to be answered\, we can mention here: What is Genealogy? How is archive research conducted? What sources can we use in researching ancestors? How do we build a family tree? What are the opportunities offered by the web? What is genetic genealogy? Particular attention will be paid to the Roman and Lazio area and ample space will be left for participants to ask questions and make observations’. The following have granted their patronage to the initiative: FamilySearch (in collaboration)\, Istituto Araldico Genealogico Italiano (IAGI)\, Confédération Internationale de Généalogie et d’Héraldique (CIGH) and International Academy of Genealogy (IAG).
